Pioche, in the 1870's, was considered one of the wildest
mining camps in the west. It is claimed that 75 men were
killed in gun fights and buried in the cemetery before any
one died of a natural death. Many of those men were
buried in Boot Hill Cemetery.
Present day Pioche relies upon its use as the Lincoln
County seat, tourism, recreation, hunting and fishing,
farming and cattle ranching and some mining, for its
economic livelihood, with a fair sized retirement
community. Electric power is brought to the area from
Hoover Dam by the Lincoln County Power District,
providing low priced power. Water is abundant and sewer
capacity is excellent. Recreational facilities are located
near the Court House which includes a ballpark, swimming
pool, picnic area and the Pioche Garden Club's Memorial
Gardens.
